Originalement, la Fête de la Saint-Patrick était une fête catholique qui célèbre saint Patrick (395-461), le saint patron de l’Irlande. Aujourd’hui, il ne faut pas être irlandais ou catholique pour célébrer cette fête; il faut simplement vouloir avoir du fun! There are many parades in cities all over the world, people wear green and drink lots of Guiness (une bière irlandaise). Le 14 Février est Saint Valentin (appelé “Valentine’s Day” en anglais). Aux États-Unis, Saint Valentin est un jour d’amour. Les couples échangent des mots d’amour, des chocolats, et peut-être des roses rouge. At St. Paul’s, the Student Council hosts a surprise dance every year around Valentine’s day. Kids go with dates, and you can get your picture taken with your date if you so desire. Cupid is the God of Love, and if you are hit with one of his arrows, you will fall in love with the next person you see. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King was an advocate of civil rights during the 1950′s and 1960′s. Aux États-Unis, avant de la “Civil Rights Act” et la “Voting Rights Act” de 1964, beaucoup d’États avaient des lois très raciste. Des hommes noirs ne pouvaient pas voter; Les lois disaient qu’ils doivent s’asseoir à l’arrière des autobus, et les hommes blancs pouvaient s’asseoir dans l’avant de l’autobus; Les enfants noirs ne pouvaient pas aller à la même école que les enfants blancs. Tout était injuste. Dr. King spoke up for the rights of black Americans. One of his most important speeches was during the March on Washington, when hundreds of thousands of people came to the Lincoln memorial to demonstrate for rights. In the speech, he spoke of his “dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”. He pointed out that the United States’ Declaration of Independence says “that all men are created equal,” but the country’s laws create inequality. Il a gagné de la Prix Nobel de la Paix en 1964. He was assissinated on April 3, 1968. His birthday is a National Holiday. At St. Paul’s School, we spend the day doing community service.

Tonight is New Year’s Eve, or, in other words, Ce soir est la Saint-Sylvestre. Aux États-Unis, on a beaucoup de célèbrations pour announcer la nouvelle année. À New-York, par exemple, à Times Square, il y a une grande fête sur les rues le 31 Décembre. À minuit, tout le monde regarde une boule énorme qui baisse. Also, on New Year’s, many people make New Years Resolutions. Your New Years Resolution is something that you resolve to change about yourself in the new year. Popular choices include developing good habits (such as Eating healthily or exercising more often) or ending bad habits– par exemple, on peut se dire qu’on ne fumera plus dans 2008. Sadly, many people forget their new year’s resolution by mid-January. Qu’est-ce que c’est votre “New Year’s Resolution”? Moi, je n’en ai pas encore décidé une. J’ai encore sept heures et une demi-heure pour choisir une très bonne resolution. Je me demande si les marocains ont les “New-Years” traditions semblables que nous aux États Unis.

Boxing Day

Although not observed in the United States, Boxing Day is a holiday celebrated in many other English-speaking countries such as the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It falls on December 26, the day after Christmas, and as far as I can tell from my research on Wikipedia it’s basically a second Christmas; people exchange gifts and eat leftovers from the day before. On l’appelle “Boxing Day” à cause des “boxes” qui portent des cadeaux de Noël, je pense.

Christmas day (en français: Noël) is fast approaching: Christmas eve (the day before Christmas) is December 24, and Christmas is the next day. On that joyful day kids around the world eagerly rush downstairs to see what Santa Claus has brought them. Qui est Santa Claus? Je vais expliquer: Santa Claus is a jolly old elf who has a toy-building workshop at the North Pole. All year, Santa’s helpers, who are also elves, build toys for good boys and girls. Santa Claus keeps a great big list of all the children who have been good and all the children who have been bad. If you’ve been good, he gives you lots of presents when he comes down from the North Pole on Christmas eve…By Christmas Eve rolls around, Santa’s list is complete and all the toys are ready to be given to the good boys and girls. Santa loads up all the toys into his great big sack and puts on his sleigh. His sleigh is pulled by eight flying Reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder, and Blitzen. Reindeer, sleigh, and Santa fly all over the world and land on people’s snow-covered (or not so snow-covered) roofs. Santa then takes the sack and goes down the Chimney with the presents. The family has set up a Christmas tree under which Santa lays the big presents. The smaller presents he puts in stockings hanging next to the fireplace and then he goes back up the chimney, onto the roof, gets into his sleigh, and goes to the next house to repeat the process. La Thème de mon blog sera les fêtes des États-Unis: Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, April Fools, July 4th, Columbus Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and all the minor ones too. J’espère que les étudiants marocains pourront ajouter des commentaires sur des fêtes marocains.
